Introducing Baykeeper IPA in Cans – A Collaboration IPA That Supports Fierce Champions of the San Francisco Bay

Once again, we’re proud to partner up with local nonprofit San Francisco Baykeeper and announce our limited-edition collaboration brew, Baykeeper IPA, in cans for the very first time.  A San Francisco-style IPA, Baykeeper IPA is a crisp and refreshing, yet high ABV brew that brims with fruit-forward hop layers.  Just in time for Baykeeper’s 30th anniversary this Fall, the collaboration beer raises visibility for this reputable nonprofit and contributes directly to the cause of a healthy San Francisco Bay.  The brew is now available in easy-to-grab cans for beer-lovers to enjoy on more adventures around the Bay and nationwide.

San Francisco born and raised, we’re lucky to be surrounded by San Francisco Bay, one of the world’s most impressive waterways and one of California’s most important ecosystems.  Now in its 30th year, Baykeeper is the only nonprofit that regularly patrols the Bay by boat in order to investigate harmful activities and stop polluters with their expertise in law, science, and advocacy.  A portion of the proceeds from this brew will directly support San Francisco Baykeeper and their mission to reduce pollution so the Bay’s water is healthy for wildlife and local communities.

“When brewing Baykeeper IPA, we were inspired by the organization’s fierce commitment to preserving the Bay, which is the crown jewel of this region.  Anchor earned its name in the late 1800s because of the historical maritime influence on the city.  We have the San Francisco Bay to thank for many things,” said Scott Ungermann, Brewmaster at Anchor Brewing Company.  “We put a strong ABV to Baykeeper IPA while still maintaining its crisp drinkability, making it the perfect drink for celebrating this fierce nonprofit while having a good time enjoying the Bay.”

“Anchor Brewing is one of our favorite partners,” said Sejal Choksi-Chugh, Executive Director at San Francisco Baykeeper.  “Not only do our staff and supporters love the beer, but Anchor staff are also enthusiastic supporters of our mission to protect the Bay.  And they show it by participating in our events, making significant donations to the cause and helping to raise awareness about Baykeeper through the collaboration beer.”  California watercolor artist Jenna Rainey hand-painted the label on Baykeeper IPA, which features Baykeeper’s patrol boat charging through the water underneath the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.

Teeming with citrus and papaya aromatics, Baykeeper IPA has a slightly sweet taste and a kick of spice with a delicate, bitter finish.  Anchor takes a balanced approach to the bitterness while ramping up the hop intensity in this release, making it a tasty San Francisco-style IPA.  Calypso, El Dorado, Cascade, and Amarillo Cryo hops were dry-hopped to amplify the fruity and piney hop aromatics in this slightly hazy brew.  Cryo hops utilize industry-leading, cryogenic hop processing technology to produce intense hop flavor and aroma, enabling us to dose large quantities of hops without introducing astringent flavors or vegetative material. Because Baykeeper IPA is a celebration of the Bay, Anchor turned to its neighbor across the Bay for some of the malt.  Based in Alameda, Admiral Maltings collaborates with family farms in California’s Sacramento Valley to sustainably grow no-till and organic barley for its floor-malt.  Floor malting is an ancient but vanishing art revered by brewers around the globe.  For Baykeeper IPA, Anchor used Admiral Gallagher’s Best from the local maltster.  This pale ale style of malt has a bright aroma with a mildly sweet, honey flavor.  In addition, Anchor used 2-row pale, acidulated malt, golden naked oats, and toasted rice, combined to create an exceptional malt profile.  The beer pours a deep golden color with a creamy, fluffy head.
