To see the original Anchor Brewery, you have to go back in time to San Francisco circa 1906. Bought in 1896 by Ernst F. Baruth and his son-in-law Otto Schinkel, Jr., the Brewery resided on Pacific Street between Larkin and Hyde. It was an ideal location for a brewery since a water works and hot water source were nearby.
This photo is likely from that fateful year of 1906—the year of the Great San Francisco Earthquake. The earthquake did not destroy the brewery, but the dozens of fires that raged across the city finally destroyed it a day later. All that remained was a brew kettle that had been crushed by the falling debris.
The brewery was moved south of Market Street in 1907. It’s the neighborhood we still call home today.
